On Course Rule Query Procedure

Writer's picture: Hartswood Golf ClubHartswood Golf Club

Following a recent query where players were unable to agree on a ruling oncourse during a competition round the Competition Committee feel it is appropriate to issue this guidance note of the compromise procedure to be adopted.

If a player claims relief such as a free drop, preferred lie, removal of obstructions etc which is disputed by another player the ball is to be played from its original position without relief. A second ball is to be played from the alternative “relief” position and both balls are to be played until holed out and both scores recorded. On return to the clubhouse a decision is to be sought from the Competitions Committee regarding which score is to apply before signing and returning the competition card. It should be noted that signing and returning an incorrect score card will lead to disqualification.

The R and A publish various free online demonstrations and videos explaining the latest rules and even test quizzes for players to familiarise themselves with the up to date rules and all players are invited to use this resource to avoid future conflict or errors.
