The Winter Eclectic and Jackpot Challenge is back.  It is a (handicap non-qualifying) competition for FUN (repeat – for FUN) played on your own times.

The Eclectic rules are:-

You can enter and submit up to a maximum of 10 cards any time between 1st October 2024 and the closing date of noon 30th March 2025.  For the Winter Eclectic the best score on each individual hole taken from those 10 cards will count to your gross final round score.  80% of your INDEX allowance to one decimal place (NOT handicap allowance) on 30th March 2025 will be deducted to give your nett final round score.

The Winter Jackpot Challenge is a separate comp that is combined with the Winter Eclectic (same cards, same scores) but it creates a points “league” which rewards better individual hole scores over your chosen ten rounds with the winner being the player with the highest points total.

The Jackpot Challenge rules are:-

Scores are calculated using 95% of your playing handicap off yellow tees applied against the best individual hole scores from your maximum 10 eclectic cards (no need to submit any extra cards). You will only get points once for each hole so if you get 10 birdies on the same hole tough it will only count once.

You earn points as follows:-

Nett par or above = NIL points

Nett birdie = 3 points (e.g. a gross par 4 on a hole you get a stroke on)

Nett eagle = 4 points

Nett albatross = 5 points

GROSS hole in one = 6 points (we had one in 2023)

One off entry fee £7 covering both competitions payable BEFORE your first round. £5 is for the Eclectic and £2 is for the Jackpot Challenge.

The prizes will be a share of cash from the final pool.  For example if we get 20 entrants Eclectic first prize £50 (+bragging rights) second prize £30 third prize £20 and for the Jackpot Challenge two prizes which will be £25, £15.  The prizes will be adjusted in approximately those ratios to reflect the size of the final kitties but if there is a large field the Eclectic first prize will be capped at £50 and 4th/5th place prize may be given. In the event of ties there will be a countback for the Eclectic and if still tied the prize(s) will be shared.  Jackpot Challenge ties will share the prizes.

For the technically minded/those still interested/nerds and anyone still awake please read on.

As this runs over several months and to also stay within the limitations of the scoring programme software it necessitates having an element of flexibility and compromise in the rules.  Therefore all play will be “deemed” to be off the yellow tees i.e. you can play off the white tees if you wish but you will not receive any additional stroke allowances over your 80% INDEX allowance to one decimal place (Eclectic) or 95% yellow tee handicap allowance (Jackpot).  Neither the computer scoring system nor the Competition Committee can cope with varying tees and slope indices.  This yellow tee limitation also eradicates any issues if the Greenkeeper moves to using winter tees only over the winter.  You must also play the course as you find it on the day of play so there may be temporary greens, tee mats, short holes, lift and place etc.  You must declare to playing partners/marker you are entering an eclectic/jackpot card BEFORE you first tee off and then submit the card (dated, printed and signed by both player and marker) on the day of play.  Having declared an entry, you MUST submit the card even if it does not improve any hole scores, as it will still count towards your maximum ten attempts. (Anything else such as deciding to enter/not enter the score AFTER play is cheating!).  You can use your score from any other winter singles competition you play but must fill out a separate stand alone eclectic/jackpot card. These eclectic card scores will not be automatically entered on the official handicap system so if you wish to enter your score for handicap update purposes you must do so separately as a general play score.

No gimmes on holes you want to use. We do not wish to slow play down so you do NOT need to play ten full medal rounds but you MUST putt out on any individual hole you wish to return a score for – so only if in doubt putt it out. To enable the computer to handle missing hole scores on your card (e.g. a pickup) you will be given a score of 9 on any hole you do not finish on the day pending you returning a better score in your other attempts. Anyone who does not think they can beat a score of 9 in their 10 attempts at a hole should speak to the handicap committee.

Provisional score updates will be given periodically.

If you have any queries please speak to or leave a message for the Competitions Committee.

Good luck, play well, have fun – you do the 10 cards the computer will do the rest.

This optional sheet can be used or ignored as you wish but it is for your personal convenience only and cannot be used as an entry in the competition. All competition entries must be on signed/counter signed and dated cards.
